With this toaster, actually very hard.
For plain, standard-size bread, this toaster performs so-so. The toasting is not very even- almost as if one or two of the heating elements aren't actually heating. I've looked inside while the machine is active and all *appear* to be functioning, but alas, it just doesn't even come close to toasting evenly.
The real issue with this toaster is the carriage, the little ledge that raises and lowers the toast. I guess someone at Oster decided that they could save money by making the metal piece slightly smaller, but what happens is that whatever you're toasting (pop tarts *especially*) slide off one side and then become impinged inside the toaster when the carriage pops up. This usually results in ten minutes spent digging out pop tart chunks with a fork. (After the toaster had been unplugged, of course!) Some of these chunks then stay caught in the unit because they are too big to filter down to the crumb tray.
Also worth mentioning is the "frozen" feature. It's worth mentioning because it is useless marketing fluff. I can't tell any discernible difference between standard toasting and "frozen" toasting.
All-in-all I don't know why it took me so long to get a new toaster. I highly recommend avoiding this toaster at all costs.
